Rather than put these boys on a diet, we’re providing here the simple instructions for making your own “Mountain Bluebird Modification” for the benefit of these big boys.Ī pair of channel-lock pliers opened to its widest setting works very well for this mini-project, although any pliers will do. We’ve heard reports of a small number very (shall we say) well-fed Eastern Bluebird males needing this slight tweak to feel comfortable entering and exiting the feeder. So I guess if you’re having problems, keep at it, and be patient. The BBF1 now comes in two stunning colors – Blue and Copper.ĭo-It-Yourself Mountain Bluebird ModificationĪ few of our customers have requested instructions for making the Mountain Bluebird Modification on their own Bluebird Nut feeders. It’s so nice not to have to scare the starlings off the worms anymore.
Build your own bluebird feeder update#
UPDATE after almost two weeks and lots of coaxing, side, off, side on,food on roof…they FINALLY GOT IT!īoth go in and out easily and frequently now. I am using freeze dried worms, maybe I’ll try live worms to see if that entices them enough to enter through the holes. I so wanted this to work! Keep the greedy birds away, feed my mam bluebird and keep the worms nice and dry. We’ve put worms on top of the feeder to attract them to the feeder, but again the bluebirds get a couple then they are eaten by the grackles. I’ve left the panel off when I’ve been sitting there and watching but I can’t do that days on end. If I take the one panel out they have went in, but we have so many grackles and starlings that they get to all the worms first. The feeder is cute and well made, but no matter what I do I can’t get the bluebirds to go in when the panels are in place.

It's built very sturdy, comes fully assembled, and looks great too!

I'll probably close it up again so that other birds (grackles) don't try to takeover.īut ever since I changed to this feeder, I have not seen one single grackle in our yard! I reopened it again and they went back in right away.
Build your own bluebird feeder how to#
I did close it after a few days and the female figured out how to get inside, but then I saw the amount of mealworms wasn't really diminishing while it was closed up. No grackles, so far, have attempted to takeover this feeder! There wasn't a whole lot of action for the first couple days, but after a few days they figured it out and went in. Overall, it worked! I had it open for a couple days. The recommendation said to actually open it up so they could get used to being inside and then eventually close it and hopefully they'll use the holes to get in.

I removed both of the aforementioned feeders, hung this one from a shepherd's hook placed near their birdhouse, and waited. I found this one and thought I'd give it a try. Once the grackles devoured the mealworms, there was very little left for the bluebirds and I was refilling daily. Both have holes at the bottom to help with draining.īluebirds had a heck of a time using these feeders because of grackles pretty much taking over. One was one of those clear suction cup ones (had it mounted to our composite/fiberglass deck) and the other was a metal one with a cover over it. Previously, I had two feeders that were supposed to be for the bluebirds.
